Moskowitz Leads 9 Members in Urging Speaker to Keep House in Session Amid Escalating Iran Conflict
As events in the Middle East continue to rapidly escalate, Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) led 9 colleagues in a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson urging him to cancel next week’s scheduled House recess and keep the House of Representatives in session. The letter stresses the need for Congress to remain flexible and responsive as military operations involving Iran continue to unfold.
Over the weekend, the United States and Israel carried out coordinated military strikes against Iranian targets, resulting in the deaths of several senior Iranian figures, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has since launched significant retaliatory attacks across the region, targeting both military assets and civilian areas, with six United States service members confirmed among the casualties.
“If U.S. service members are in harm’s way, the House must remain in session,” said Congressman Moskowitz. “Our constitutional responsibilities do not pause for recess.”
As a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Moskowitz also expressed concern over the recent cancellation of a committee markup during such a critical time. He underscored the importance of committees of jurisdiction meeting regularly to conduct oversight and debate legislative proposals while events continue to evolve.
The letter urges the Speaker to cancel next week’s recess so the House can fulfill its constitutional responsibilities and respond as necessary to ongoing developments. To read the full letter, click HERE.
