WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-Florida) issued the following statement after President Joe Biden, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell held talks at the White House on the debt ceiling:

“For weeks, I’ve been calling for our leaders to always be talking. The American people deserve to know that we are closer to defaulting on America’s debt than ever before.  Today’s meeting was a step in the right direction, and it’s good that they will meet again on Friday. With just under three weeks to go, we should say the quiet part out loud that people whisper around the halls of Congress: this is headed towards a negotiation. We should be talking about – extending the debt ceiling until after the election, reclaiming unused covid funds, and discussions about discretionary spending without touching Social Security, Medicare, or Defense.”
