Service Academies
There are five (5) service academies:
- United States Air Force Academy (USAFA)
- United States Naval Academy (USNA)
- U.S.M.A. West Point
- United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA)
- United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA)
Note: A nomination is not required for an appointment to USCGA, which has its own nationwide application process.
Academy nominations are highly competitive, so candidates are strongly encouraged to apply to more than one (1) academy and from more than one (1) nomination source. In addition to this office, other nomination sources include both Florida U.S. Senators and the Vice President (if highly qualified). A candidate may also seek a Presidential nomination if they have a parent(s) with military ties, which makes them eligible.
Each Representative and Senator is permitted to have up to five (5) of their nominees attend each academy simultaneously. Our office may nominate up to ten (10) candidates per academy per year. An academy nomination does not guarantee acceptance. The final decision of academy acceptance rests with each academy’s admissionoffice.
The Nominations Process
In order to be considered for a service academy nomination, an applicant must meet eligibility requirements established by law and must be nominated from an authorized nominating source which includes a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senate, or Vice President. Nominations from this Office for USAFA, USNA, and West Point must reside within District Boundaries. USMMA nominations may be made for applicants who reside anywhere in the State of Florida.
