Moskowitz Discusses Bipartisan DHS Reform Package on 535 News
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jared Moskowitz joined Scott MacFarlane of the MeidasTouch Network for an interview with 535 News to discuss his bipartisan legislative package to reform the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). During the interview, Moskowitz outlined the need to restructure key agencies and align them with departments better suited to their missions.
During the conversation, Moskowitz discussed why he believes DHS has become too large and bureaucratic to function effectively, arguing that agencies like FEMA, TSA, and the Secret Service are increasingly being slowed down by political dysfunction and administrative red tape.
“Scott, DHS has simply grown too big and too vulnerable to political dysfunction,” said Moskowitz. “When a department becomes this massive, the mission gets lost. FEMA needs to move faster when disaster strikes, TSA officers and travelers should not be caught in the middle of shutdown politics, and protecting the President should not depend on the bureaucracy of a massive department.”
As part of the package, Moskowitz’s legislation would:
- Move the United States Secret Service to the Executive Office of the President
- Restore FEMA as an independent, Cabinet-level agency
- Transfer TSA back to the Department of Transportation
As the only former Emergency Management Director in Congress, Congressman Moskowitz brings a unique perspective to the conversation around DHS reform and government efficiency. Earlier this Congress, Moskowitz reintroduced the FEMA Independence Act with Congressman Byron Donalds to remove FEMA from DHS and restore it as an independent, Cabinet-level agency reporting directly to the President.
The broader legislative package builds on Moskowitz’s continued bipartisan efforts to make government work better and ensure critical agencies are able to focus on their core missions without being bogged down by unnecessary bureaucracy or political gridlock.
