Moskowitz Calls for Congressional Briefing on Iran Negotiations Amid Rising Tensions

WASHINGTON, DC — Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and ongoing diplomatic talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran, Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) – House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Intelligence – called on the Department of State and Department of Defense to provide Members of Congress with a full classified briefing on the status of negotiations and the broader regional security situation.

Moskowitz has requested the classified briefing take place by Tuesday, March 3, 2026. To date, the Trump Administration has only briefed the “Gang of 8,” not the full body of Congress. Text of the letter can be found here or below.

“Dear Secretary Rubio and Secretary Hegseth,

I am writing to request a classified briefing for Members of Congress on the status of negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the evolving security situation in region. Members, particularly on relevant House Committees, have been closely tracking public developments but have yet to receive any direct communication from the administration.

The latest round of U.S.-Iran talks regarding diplomatic engagement and nuclear-related concerns concluded with an understanding that both parties will continue to engage. The Omani Foreign Affairs Minister reportedly stated that technical-level discussions will be held in Vienna next week. While negotiations continue, the broader security situation is extremely tense. U.S. forces have positioned significant naval and air assets in the Middle East and there have been repeated public warnings of the potential for military action should diplomacy fail. Additionally, multiple nations have escalated their threat assessment for the region – issuing travel warnings to their citizens and evacuating embassies.

In light of the increasingly sensitive situation in the region and Congress’s authorities related to treaties and declarations of war, I request a briefing be provided to the relevant committees on the status of negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, diplomatic coordination with allies and partners, and a security assessment of risk factors in the region. Due to the gravity of the situation and the potential implications for U.S. national security and regional stability, I request the briefing occur on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. I look forward to a comprehensive briefing from your agencies and remain committed to supporting responsible and informed oversight of U.S. foreign policy.

Sincerely,
Jared Moskowitz
Member of Congress”
